Keeping It Fun

This week the studio has been buzzing as we ran one of our summer holiday courses for children. Over four mornings the students got stuck into mini-projects and exercises designed to introduce them to new materials and approaches to drawing.

They have worked in sketchbooks, used long drawing sticks and charcoal to draw life size human figures, studied colour theory to make pastel drawings of ice creams on black paper, and then completed their first oil painting on canvas over two days.

We will be running similar exercises next week for a new group.

A reminder that, to coincide with Hampshire Open Studios, we will be open to drop-in visitors this weekend and next between 10am and 4pm: Sat 22nd, Sun 23rd, Sat 29th and Sun 30th August.

Artwork of The Week

Self-portrait of the artist Winifred Knights (1899-1947)

Knights was a British painter active in the first half of the twentieth century. She studied at the Slade and became the first English woman to win the Prix de Rome scholarship to the British School at Rome.

This delicate drawing with colour wash shows her in the distinctive, simple dress she was known for wearing. Two of her best-known paintings Deluge and The Marriage at Cana also include self-portraits.
